The word “casual”, in the vulgar vernacular, is taken to denote a form of dress that is not formal. People have different thoughts on the meaning of business casual. It means that you can be comfortable but still appear presentable, business-like, and professional to clients, co-workers, and superiors.

Formal clothes are sometimes looked at as business casual in some work environments. When you go to work in your office, ensure you comprehend fully what they mean by “business casual”. Here are some general rules and tips to achieve that business casual look for you.

Ties add flavor and are essentially required in business casual attire. It is advised that you keep a couple of ties at your office or bag for unexpected visits from your clients.

You can pick long or short sleeve polo shirts to wear. Wearing garments that are made from 100% cotton absorb more perspiration and prevent embarrassing stains on your clothing.

Go for light colored clothes. Always wear khakis that are well ironed and tidy and that have a perfect fit on you.

A t-shirt or a faded polo shirt is a not acceptable – don’t forget the term ‘business casual’ contains the word business.

Forget jeans and denim.

Wearing informal on a business call or meeting can give a bad name to your company. It will be reflective on what kind of employee are you at the workplace.

Don’t wear rubber shoes or sandals. Shoes like this just don’t work with the khaki and tucked in shirt look.

Wear clothes that are neither too tight or baggy. It makes you look as if you have a questionable reputation.

Going without socks is not right. It can also wreck your look quickly.

Those who have bad personal hygiene will not be welcome. Surely, you do not need an explanation for this!

At work it’s important to dress in classic pieces because you want to influence people, not have people commenting on your latest fashions. I always suggest to my clients that they invest in some classic pieces, and mix them with a few modern, trendy items like ties, shirts, blouses, and accessories. Faddish items are expensive when building a working wardrobe and will be out of style within a year or so. Classic items last for 5-7 years!

The colors you wear in business communicate messages. Clothing colors can elicit specific, desired responses from a colleague or potential client. I always coach my professional clients to wear dark neutrals in the workplace. They are more business appropriate than bright or bold colors and communicate that you mean business. This is why you see many designers making suits out of dark fabrics. When you implement these “quick tips” into your company culture, your employees will look polished and professional. Your clients will respect you and perceive your employees to be the true professionals that they are. Business Casual – 3 Ways to Look Sharp in Men’s Business Casual

Men, when it comes to dressing for work you’ve had it easy until recently Men’s clothing has evolved over the years to a look that fits men’s body types and activities, and makes most men look great.

Most men look good in a suit, and the traditional colors for business, such as a navy or grey suit with a white or blue shirt, compliment most men’s skin, hair and eye colors.

Then along came business casual and a new generation of men in the workplace, and the old rules no longer apply. Putting together all the elements isn’t as easy as coordinating a suit. It’s more difficult to dress in casual mode and look good.

1. Every industry has a dress code. Do you work in a conservative industry, such as finance or insurance? You most likely need to wear a suit when meeting clients, and dress down only on casual Fridays.

On the other hand, if you work in creative industries, such as advertising or design companies, it’s fine to have a bit of an edge. But you have to tailor your looks to a work environment, and choose clothes that suit your body type, coloring and personality.

And if you work in a high-tech, such as a software design company, the look is very casual. But you still have to look neat and clean. Grungy is not a business casual look!

2. Look at the people above you, and your clients. What are they wearing? If your boss or manager wears a suit most days, despite the casual dress code, you should probably do the same. Remember that you should be dressing for the job you aspire to, not the job you have now.

How do your clients dress? Dress to make them feel comfortable. If they are dressed very casually, you can match them, but be sure to be clean and neat. Sloppy and grungy are not business casual looks!

3. When in doubt, dress up. A common rule for business is to dress in traditional business attire for important meetings with outside business people. They still expect to see a business suit or jacket when a business deal is closed. Wearing a suit to meet a new client, or for a job interview, shows respect. Wear traditional business clothing when conducting business overseas.

If you are staying in the office, you can wear a sweater and casual pants. But jeans are only allowed in the most relaxed environments. Check with your human resources department if you aren’t sure what’s allowed.
